Choosing jar & bottle openers

In short

Jar openers, bottle openers and can openers grip lids, caps and tins so they open with less hand strength. They may suit people with arthritis, weak hands or one working hand. Check whether a manual opener is enough or an electric opener that does the turning would suit better.

How to choose jar & bottle openers

Questions about jar & bottle openers

Which jar opener is easiest for arthritis?

For mild arthritis, a non-slip pad or a hand-held opener for jars adds grip and leverage. For painful or very weak hands, an electric jar opener that sits on the lid and turns it may suit better. An OT can help you compare options and other ways of working in the kitchen.

How do you open a jar with one hand?

To open a jar with one hand, stand it on a non-slip mat or pad so it is less likely to turn. An electric opener, such as the One Touch Electric Jar Opener, can then sit on the lid and do the turning. For bottles, the Homecraft Popper One Handed Bottle Opener is designed for use with one hand.

What is the easiest opener for bottles with tight caps?

For screw-top bottles, a non-slip bottle grip gives more hold on a small cap. An electric bottle opener, such as the OneTouch Automatic Twizz Off Bottle Opener, sits on top and turns the cap for you. A 6-in-1 multi opener can also handle several cap and lid sizes.

How does an electric can opener work?

An electric can opener clamps onto the rim of the tin and cuts around the lid by itself once you press the button. You do not need to squeeze or turn a handle. Check that the opener suits the size of tins you usually buy and that the button is easy to press.
