Choosing resistance bands

In short

Resistance bands and exercise tubing, such as THERABAND and Metron bands, are stretchy bands and tubes that add load to strength and rehab exercises. They may suit people following a physio’s home program and older adults keeping strong. The main thing to check is the band’s strength, so start light and move up as the exercise gets easier.

How to choose resistance bands

Questions about resistance bands

What do THERABAND colours mean?

THERABAND colours show the level of resistance, from light to heavy. The Beginner Home Pack contains yellow, red and green bands, the Advanced Home Pack contains blue and black, and gold is labelled maximum. Tan is the extra thin option for very gentle exercise. Start with a lighter colour and move up as your physio advises.

Are resistance bands latex free?

Not all resistance bands are latex free. Some are made from natural rubber latex, which can affect people with a latex allergy. THERABAND Latex Free Resistance Band, THERABAND Non-Latex Tubing and Rolyan Latex Free Energising Exercise Band are made without latex. Check the product name and label before buying for someone with an allergy.

What is the difference between resistance bands and exercise tubing?

Resistance bands are flat and wide, so they can wrap around a foot, thigh or hand, which suits many rehab exercises. Exercise tubing is round and easier to grip, and is often used with handles or a door anchor for pulling and pressing movements. Both come in colour-coded strengths, and a physio can advise which suits your program.

How do I choose the right resistance band strength?

Choose a band that lets you complete each exercise slowly and with good form, so you feel the effort by the last few repetitions. If you cannot finish the set without straining, use a lighter band. If it feels easy, move up a level. York bands are labelled with a kilogram range, while THERABAND uses colours.
