Choosing rollators & seat walkers

In short

A rollator, or wheelie walker, is a walking aid with wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat. It suits people who can walk steadily but get tired, need rests, or walk outdoors. Check you can squeeze and lock the brakes easily, because you rely on them every time you stop or sit.

How to choose rollators & seat walkers

Questions about rollators & seat walkers

Is a wheelie walker the same as a rollator?

Yes. Wheelie walker, seat walker and rollator are common Australian names for the same walking aid. It has wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat for rests. A frame with only two front wheels and no seat is a different aid, called a walking frame with wheels.

Is a three-wheel or four-wheel walker better?

A three-wheel walker is narrow and easy to steer in tight spaces, but most have no seat. A four-wheel walker gives a wider, steadier base and a seat for rests. Four wheels may suit people who need to sit often or feel less steady on their feet.

Can someone push you while you sit on a rollator?

No. A standard rollator seat is only for resting while it is parked with the brakes on. It is not designed to be pushed with someone sitting on it. If you need to be pushed part of the way, look at a 2-in-1 rollator and transit chair, which a carer can push.

What size wheels does a rollator need for outdoors?

Larger rollator wheels roll more easily over cracked footpaths, grass and uneven ground, while smaller wheels suit smooth floors and shopping centres. Some seat walkers give the wheel size in their name, such as 6 inch and 8 inch models. Check the tyres and brakes suit the ground you walk on most.
