How to choose back braces & supports

Questions about back braces & supports

What is the difference between a back brace and a sacroiliac belt?

A back brace wraps around the lower back and usually covers the area from the hips to the lower ribs. A sacroiliac belt is a narrow belt worn lower, around the pelvis, over the joints where the spine meets the hips. A physio can tell you which area needs support.

How long should you wear a back brace each day?

Wear time for a back brace depends on why you need it. Many people wear one for specific activities, such as lifting, gardening or long periods of standing, and take it off to rest. Follow your physio’s or GP’s advice on wear time, and keep up any exercises they recommend.

What does a posture brace do?

A posture brace uses straps over the shoulders to gently draw them back, acting as a reminder to sit and stand upright. A clavicle posture brace has a similar design and is sometimes used after a collarbone injury on a doctor’s advice. A physio can suggest posture exercises to do alongside wearing a brace.

What size back brace do I need?

Measure around your waist, or your hips for a sacroiliac belt, where the brace will sit, over thin clothing. Then compare the measurement with the maker’s size chart. Some braces, such as the Vulkan Back Support, come in a universal size. If you are between sizes, ask us or your physio.
