How to choose wrist braces & splints

Questions about wrist braces & splints

What is the difference between a wrist brace and a wrist splint?

The terms overlap, but a wrist splint usually has a rigid stay or shell that holds the wrist still in a set position. A wrist brace may be firm or flexible, often with straps for an adjustable fit. Soft elastic wrist supports give the lightest support. A physio, OT or GP can advise how much support you need.

Should you wear a wrist splint at night?

Many people are advised to wear a wrist splint at night, for example with carpal tunnel symptoms. A night splint is designed to keep the wrist straight during sleep. Whether you need one, and for how long, depends on the cause, so follow your GP’s, physio’s or hand therapist’s advice. Loosen the straps if your fingers swell or change colour.

What is a CMC thumb brace?

A CMC thumb brace supports the joint at the base of the thumb, where it meets the wrist. It is designed to limit movement at that joint while leaving the fingertips free for pinch and grip. These braces are often used for thumb arthritis, and a hand therapist can help choose between soft and firmer styles.

How do you measure for a wrist brace?

Wrap a soft tape measure around the wrist at the crease, where the hand meets the forearm, and compare it with the product’s size chart. Some wrist braces also ask for the width of the hand across the knuckles. If you are between sizes, ask for advice, and check whether you need a left or right brace.
