Choosing coccyx & donut cushions

In short

A coccyx cushion has a cut-out at the back so the tailbone sits over a gap, and a donut cushion has a centre hole. Both may suit people who find sitting on the tailbone uncomfortable. Check the cushion fits the chair, and ask a nurse or OT if pressure injuries are a risk.

Types of coccyx & donut cushions

How to choose coccyx & donut cushions

Questions about coccyx & donut cushions

Which way round do you sit on a coccyx cushion?

Sit on a coccyx cushion with the cut-out at the back, so the tailbone sits over the gap. On a coccyx wedge, the thicker end also goes to the back. Sit right back in the chair so the cushion supports the thighs and hips.

Is a coccyx wedge or a donut cushion better for tailbone pain?

A coccyx wedge has a cut-out at the back, so the tailbone sits over a gap while the thighs and hips take the weight. A donut cushion has a centre hole and spreads weight around a ring. Comfort varies from person to person, so ask a GP or physio which shape suits the cause of the pain.

Can a donut cushion be used for pressure sores?

Pressure care guidelines advise against ring or donut cushions for people at risk of pressure sores, as the ring can press on the skin around it. A donut cushion is designed for comfort when sitting, not for pressure care. A nurse or OT can advise on a suitable pressure cushion instead.

Can I use a coccyx or tailbone cushion in the car or on an office chair?

A coccyx or tailbone cushion can be used on an office chair, dining chair or car seat. It raises the sitting height, so check feet still reach the floor or pedals comfortably. In the car, also check the driving position, head clearance and view of the road.
