How to choose bed rails & bed sticks

Questions about bed rails & bed sticks

What is the difference between a bed rail and a bed stick?

A bed rail runs along the side of the bed and acts as a guard. A bed stick is a short handle near the head of the bed to grip when sitting up or standing. It leaves room to get in and out. Many people who only need a hand up find a bed stick is enough.

Are bed rails safe for elderly people?

Bed rails can help some older people feel more confident in bed, but they are not right for everyone. A person can be caught in gaps between the rail, mattress and bed frame. A confused person may also try to climb over. Ask an OT or nurse to assess before using full-length bed guards, as a low bed or a bed stick may suit better.

Will a bed rail fit my bed?

Whether a rail fits your bed depends on the rail and the bed type. Side rails for care beds are made for one model, such as the Full Length Steel Bed Rails for the K-Dee Bed. Portable bed rails for home beds usually slide under the mattress or strap to the base. Check the base type and mattress depth before choosing.

What is an overbed pole used for?

An overbed pole, also called a self help pole or bed pole, has a handle that hangs above the bed. A person grips it to pull up or shift position. It suits people with good arm strength. Some poles fix to one bed model, such as the Self Help Pole for the K-Dee Bed, and others are freestanding.
