Choosing overbed tables

In short

An overbed table is a height-adjustable bed table on castors that slides over a bed or chair. It suits anyone eating, reading or using a device in bed, and the carers who bring meals. Check the table’s lowest and highest height against the bed or chair, and that the base fits underneath.

How to choose overbed tables

Questions about overbed tables

What height should an overbed table be?

Set an overbed table so the top sits just above the lap, around elbow height when sitting up in bed. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress and allow room for the knees. Then check the table’s height range. A bed that raises and lowers may need a table with a wide range.

Can an overbed table be used over a recliner chair?

Yes, many overbed tables also work over a recliner, lift chair or sofa. The base must slide under the chair, and the top must go low enough to sit just above the lap. Measure the gap under the chair and the seat height before choosing. For a low chair, look at the Over Chair Table - Ultra Low.

Can you lean on an overbed table?

No, an overbed table is designed to hold meals and items, not body weight. On castors, it can roll or tip if someone leans on it or pushes up to stand. Lock the castors where possible, and use a bed stick or grab rail for support.

What is a split top overbed table?

A split top overbed table has one section that tilts and another that stays flat. The tilting part angles a book, tablet or papers towards the person, while the flat part holds a drink or plate. Examples include the Royale Overbed Table with Tilting Split and the Enjoycare EKT202 table.
