Choosing grab rails

In short

Grab rails give you something firm to hold when sitting, standing or stepping in the bathroom or bedroom. Fixed rails screw into the wall for long-term use, while a suction grab rail suits renters and is mainly for balance. Have a qualified tradesperson fit fixed rails into a solid wall or studs.

How to choose grab rails

Questions about grab rails

Can a suction grab rail hold your body weight?

A suction grab rail is designed to help with balance and steadying, not to take a person’s full weight when pulling up. Its grip depends on a smooth, flat surface and should be checked before each use. Where a rail must take weight, choose a fixed grab rail screwed into a solid wall.

Where should grab rails be installed in a bathroom?

For bathroom support, grab rails usually go beside the toilet, inside the shower near the taps, and next to the bath where a person steps in. The right height and angle depend on the person’s height and how they move. An occupational therapist can advise on placement before a tradesperson fits them.

Do I need a tradesperson to install a grab rail?

A fixed grab rail should be installed by a qualified tradesperson, screwed into wall studs or solid masonry with suitable fixings. Plasterboard alone is not strong enough to hold a rail. If you rent, ask your landlord before drilling, or use a suction rail for light support only.

What is a floor to ceiling grab bar?

A floor to ceiling grab bar is an upright pole that runs from the floor to the ceiling. It gives a firm handhold where there is no nearby wall, such as beside a bed, recliner or toilet. Check the ceiling height and ceiling type before asking for a quote, as the bar must sit securely at both ends.
