Choosing urinals & bedpans

In short

A urinal, or urine bottle, lets a person pass urine in bed, sitting or standing. A bedpan sits under the person in bed for urine or bowel motions, and both suit anyone who struggles to reach the toilet. Choose a male or female urinal, as the shapes are different.

How to choose urinals & bedpans

Questions about urinals & bedpans

What is the difference between a male and female urinal?

A male urinal is shaped like a bottle with a narrow, angled opening. A female urinal has a wider, shaped opening that fits against the body to catch urine. Sizes vary too, such as the 800 ml and 1000 ml Homecraft Economy female models.

What is a slipper bedpan?

A slipper bedpan is flatter than a standard bedpan, with a thin, low front edge. It slides under the person more easily, so it can suit people who cannot lift their hips far. The Bed Pan Slipper Large is a bigger version of the same shape.

How do you clean a urine bottle?

Empty the urine bottle after each use, rinse it with water, then wash it with warm soapy water. Let it dry with the lid off, and replace it if it becomes stained or cracked. Autoclavable urinals, such as the Homecraft Economy Female Urinal, 1000ml, can also be steam sterilised in clinical settings.

Can you use a urinal bottle lying down in bed?

Yes, a urinal bottle, or pee bottle, can be used lying on your back or side, as well as sitting or standing. A non-spill design, such as the Male Urinal Spil Pruf, can help if the bottle tips over in bed. A carer or nurse can show the easiest position for each person.
