Choosing raised toilet seats
In short
A raised toilet seat, also called a toilet seat riser or raised loo seat, sits on the toilet pan to make the seat higher. It suits people who can walk to the toilet but find a standard seat too low to sit on or rise from. Check the toilet pan shape and the lift you need before you choose.
| Type | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed height raiser | A seat raiser with one set height, such as the BetterLiving Fixed Height Raised Toilet Seat. | Suits: People who know the height they need and want a simple raiser. |
| Adjustable or multi-height raiser | Lets you choose the lift, such as the BetterLiving Adjustable Toilet Seat Raiser or Homecraft models in 6, 10 and 15 cm. | Suits: People whose needs may change, or who want to try a height before settling. |
| Raiser with armrests | Adds armrests either side to push on, such as the Etac Cloo Toilet Seat Raiser with Armrests. | Suits: People who need help to push up but have no room for a toilet frame. |
| Raiser with lid | Comes with a lid that closes over the raised seat, such as the Toilet Seat Raiser Fitted with Lid. | Suits: Shared bathrooms where others prefer a toilet with a lid. |
| Freestanding seat raiser | Stands on its own legs over the toilet, like the Etac Swift Freestanding Over Toilet Seat Raiser. | Suits: Toilets where a raiser cannot sit firmly on the pan rim. |
How to choose raised toilet seats
- Measure from the floor to the back of the knee while seated, and compare it with the toilet pan rim height, with the seat lifted.
- Check the toilet pan’s shape and rim against each raiser’s fitting details before you add it to a price request.
- Choose armrests if the person needs something to push on and there is no toilet surround or grab rail.
- Check how the raiser is held in place, such as brackets or clamps, so it sits firmly on your toilet.
- Consider a lid if others share the toilet, and a model that lifts off easily for cleaning.
- Ask your OT for the right seat height if you have been given hip or knee precautions.
Questions about raised toilet seats
How do I know what height raised toilet seat I need?
Sit on a chair and measure from the floor to the back of the knee. Then lift the toilet seat and measure from the floor to the rim of the toilet pan. The difference is roughly how much lift a raised toilet seat should add. Homecraft Raised Toilet Seat with Armrests models come in 6, 10 and 15 cm heights, for example.
Do raised toilet seats fit all toilets?
Many raised toilet seats fit standard toilet pans, but not every shape. Pans that are very long, very narrow or have an unusual rim can stop a toilet seat raiser sitting firmly. Check the pan shape and rim before asking for a quote, or consider a freestanding over toilet seat raiser if the pan is unusual.
Should I get a raised toilet seat with or without arms?
A toilet seat riser with armrests gives a person something to push on when standing and to hold when sitting down. A seat without arms suits people who already have a toilet surround or grab rail, or who have good leg strength. The Etac Cloo Toilet Seat Raiser comes in both versions.
What is the difference between a fixed and an adjustable toilet seat raiser?
A fixed height raiser, such as the BetterLiving Fixed Height Raised Toilet Seat, has one set height. An adjustable raiser, such as the BetterLiving Adjustable Toilet Seat Raiser, lets you change the height. Fixed models are simple, while adjustable ones suit people whose needs may change.
Buying raised toilet seats through Joy Ours
Can I use NDIS or other funding for raised toilet seats?
Often, yes. Joy Ours is a registered NDIS provider (No. 4053607206). We quote for every kind of NDIS plan, Support at Home, DVA, TAC and workers’ compensation. We also sell to private buyers. Your plan or scheme decides what it pays for. Costly or complex items may need an OT’s advice first. How funding works.
Why is there no price on the website?
We check that the item suits you, then price it for your funding: NDIS, Support at Home or private. Add products to a price request and the quote appears in your customer portal. Or send your OT’s report and we quote everything in it. Quotes from OT reports.
Can I see or try raised toilet seats before I buy?
Yes. Visit our showroom in Mount Waverley (Melbourne) or Edwardstown (Adelaide) by appointment. We also offer free home trials on selected equipment. Ask about a trial.
How is it delivered?
We aim to send your order within 3–5 business days of confirming it. We deliver Australia-wide. Our team can deliver and set up larger equipment. Shipping policy.
