How to choose toilet frames & surrounds

Questions about toilet frames & surrounds

What is the difference between an over toilet frame and a toilet surround?

An over toilet frame has its own seat and stands over the toilet pan, so it raises the seat height and adds armrests. A toilet surround has armrests but no seat, so the person sits on the normal toilet seat. Choose a frame if the toilet is too low, and a surround if only arm support is needed.

Can an over toilet aid be used as a commode?

Some over toilet aids can also be used beside the bed as a commode, with a bucket or pan fitted under the seat. Check whether the bucket and lid are included, as some models, like the Homecraft Aluminium Folding Over Toilet Aid, are sold without them.

What is a bariatric toilet frame?

A bariatric toilet frame is made for larger people, with a wider seat area and a higher safe working load than a standard frame. Models such as the Bariatric Over Toilet Aid and Hero Medical Extra Wide Over Toilet Aid give more room between the armrests. Check the safe working load and seat width against the person’s needs.

How do you measure for a toilet surround?

Measure the width of the toilet pan and the space either side of it, up to the wall, vanity or cistern. Then measure the person’s hip width while seated, so they fit between the armrests. Height-adjustable toilet surrounds can be set so the armrests sit at a comfortable height for pushing up.
